In 2004, forty-eight campers attended the overnight camp of their choice able to spend time at camp thanks to a sponsorship of over $20,000 from our organization.
Each year we receive many requests from people with disabilities to attend a variety of camps throughout Michigan. Due to the heavy financial burden placed on families of those with disabilities, attending these camps is often financially impossible. Our organization feels that every person who wishes to attend camp should have an equal opportunity to do so. We provide financial support for individuals with disabilities to attend camps that are both educational and recreational in nature. Some camps simply allow the campers to play and spend time with others who have similar challenges. The experience away at camp gives each camper a time to grow, experience new people in their lives, and ultimately develop life skills. In addition to helping campers, the camping experience also benefits the families of campers, providing a much-needed respite.
Assistance is based on need. A financial statement and an application for financial assistance must be filled out. DSRC will pay up to $300 toward the camp cost for one session. The family is responsible for the rest of the camp fee. Assistance is provided on a first come first served basis.
